What I Watched: The Best Comedy TV of 2025

I’ve said before that we are in a platinum age of television programming. With all the streamers throwing money at creative people, *cough cough, I’m available for hire,* there is simply a veritable plethora of quality shows being written, acted and filmed. 
So much so that this year, I’m breaking down my lists into categories: Comedy, Drama, Sci Fi/Comic Booky Shows and then an overall list of top shows that will cross genres.


Today, I’m looking at the comedy TV shows that I watched this year. There are a few in the other categories that will have to wait until I finish them, so those columns will come after the new year begins.

Comedy TV is a much smaller niche these days than is dramatic shows or even Sci Fi and Comic Booky shows, but there we enjoyed several of those above. 

As always, this will be my list with my thoughts and what I remember about how each show struck me. These are not meant to be full reviews. 

So, without further ado, here are my top three comedy shows from 2025.


#3: Nobody Wants This, Season Two
Kristin Bell is wildly underrated. I really enjoyed this show with its fun combination of characters who seem at times like horrible people but have some level of heart and empathy that is redemptive. It’s at times funny and other deeply and personally reflective. The questions it raises about faith and family are timely and thoughtfully presented. I won’t spoil it here but it feels to me that a third season may be coming and I’ll be very interested to where they take this story.

#2: Man on the Inside, Season Two
Speaking of actors who were on The Good Place, this show is a hoot. Ted Danson has really had a compelling second act to his career as he’s aged. This show, about an older fella navigating the world as a widower and wannabe private investigator, is just super fun. The issues of family and friendship as one ages are cleverly explored in the excellent writing. It’s generally light but hits some real strong points about what it means to grow older without giving up. I like that this season was a different kind of story and location than season one, and I’d watch another season of this for certain. 


#1: Hacks, Season 4
Speaking of great second acts, Jean Smart is a treasure. It seems as though she’s been on TV for 45 years and simply keeps getting better and better. This show was my top comedy in years past and it’s just getting better. Following the life of an aging standup comic, she’s dealing with navigating a similar landscape to the how at #2, now that I think of it. 

The writing is great, Hannah Einbinder is hysterical, and the supporting cast is strong. It has a similar sense of “who do you root for” that Nobody Wants This has as well, now that I think of it. The Studio had that as well. If I’d done a top five, that show might have squeezed in at #5 after Only Murders in the Building, which narrowly lost out on the top three despite a strong season. 

But Jean Smart is just so good. If you liked The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I think you’d enjoy this. I believe another season is coming and I’ll be there to see it with bells on.
