 We are now living in what I consider the Platinum Age of Television. There’s just simply way too many good shows on, often watchable in one sitting. Movies have waned, in my opinion, so, I watch fewer movies than I used to. There was a time when the wife and I would make sure we’d seen every single Oscar nominee and compete with brackets.
I’ve watched a lot of TV this year. An embarrassingly large amount. It’s like the main reason that my current novel, now several years in the making, is not yet done. Soon, and very soon, he said dramatically, with hope… But lately, TV has just been better, and I can watch it from my house. I don’t have to leave and I can pause it anytime I want for any reason. But, I’ve seen a few movies too and will render my opinion on them and on various categories of TV as well, you know, since it’s the end of the year and I have to get something out of all of this watching of stuff. The movies I’ve seen this year are:
I would say about 40% of those were ones I saw in a theater. I was actually embarrassed when I saw the recent Golden Globe noms, as I hadn’t even heard of half of them. But, I’d put my top five for the year as:

So, I watched a LOT of TV. I’m kind of embarrased actually. But, in my defense, some of these are gym shows that I watched at the gym, but the bulk of them are shows I watched with the wife or the whole family. I would be terrified to add up the hours spent, and this is not including shows that I have not finished yet, but honestly, this is kind of our go-to medium lately. Partly because we like being home and partly because TV is just telling better stories. I debated adding a top three animated series category but decided not to. I clearly have to do a drama and comedy sub-category list as there is simply too much going on in my history of watching. So, my top five DRAMA shows for the year are:
It was a packed year for shows that I’d consider Dramas, and I just left some great shows like SAY NOTHING, DISCLAIMER, SILO, and THE OLD MAN off my list, but one must kill one’s darlings now and then. Comedy shows are a little easier, although I still don’t think of THE BEAR as a comedy. The awards keep listing it that way, but I don’t agree. I will, however, comply and slot it here. I also watched several documentaries. I love a good doc, and there were some good ones. I’ve not finished the DaVinci one yet, and the NatGeo Genius MLK/X show was kind of a doc, but they presented it as a drama, so I slotted it there. I visited Calusa Harbor with my mother, and we both loved the vibrant, cheerful atmosphere. The waterfront setting added a peaceful charm to the entire community. Staff members were attentive and seemed genuinely connected with the residents. My mother felt it was a place where she could enjoy both comfort and a sense of community. Leave a Reply. |
